Vindo de um sólido 10º lugar em sua estreia nas ruas de St. Petersburg — onde também surpreendeu ao se classificar em terceiro — o norueguês encara agora seu primeiro grande teste em um oval da IndyCar.

Estreia acima das expectativas

Hauger descreveu o fim de semana em St. Pete como um início positivo. Apesar de dificuldades no primeiro treino livre, o piloto conseguiu reverter o cenário rapidamente. A grande surpresa veio na classificação: em apenas sua segunda experiência com os pneus alternativos (macios), garantiu a terceira posição no grid, ficando a apenas quatro centésimos da pole position.

“Foi um pouco agridoce ficar tão perto da pole, mas foi incrível ver a felicidade do time. Eu me preparei por muito tempo para esse momento”, afirmou.

Na corrida, o 10º lugar foi considerado um aprendizado importante. Hauger destacou a necessidade de ser mais decisivo nas voltas de entrada e saída dos boxes, além de não ser excessivamente cauteloso nas primeiras voltas com pneus e freios frios.

Novo desafio: o retorno ao oval de Phoenix

A etapa no Phoenix Raceway representa um cenário diferente. O carro da IndyCar, segundo Hauger, é significativamente distinto do que pilotava na Indy NXT: mais pesado, com mais potência e maior carga aerodinâmica.

Durante os testes no circuito, o norueguês se sentiu confortável rapidamente. “Fizemos simulações de corrida e me sinto bem para a classificação. Como estreante, o objetivo é ganhar experiência e fazer o melhor para o time”, explicou.

Apesar de muitos pilotos também não terem experiência recente no traçado, Hauger pondera que nomes experientes já competiram ali antes. Ainda assim, acredita que o equilíbrio do carro e a estratégia de pit stops — com mais paradas e reabastecimento — serão fatores decisivos.

A relação com o companheiro de equipe, Romain Grosjean, também tem sido um diferencial. “Trabalhamos como um time unido. É interessante ouvir o feedback dele no rádio e entender como ele ajusta o carro. Claro que quero vencê-lo, mas ambos queremos elevar o nível da equipe”, destacou.

Da Fórmula 2 aos Estados Unidos

Ex-campeão da Fórmula 3 e com duas temporadas na Fórmula 2, Hauger optou por mudar de rumo ao perceber que as oportunidades rumo à Fórmula 1 eram limitadas. A decisão de migrar para os Estados Unidos, inicialmente na Indy NXT, foi vista como um recomeço estratégico.

“O carro da F2 não parecia natural para mim. Na Indy NXT e na IndyCar me sinto mais confortável. Aqui você pode usar mais a força física, e há muito mais ajustes disponíveis dentro do carro durante a corrida”, explicou.

A IndyCar, com maior potência, sistema híbrido e complexidade aerodinâmica, representa para ele um desafio técnico mais alinhado ao seu estilo de pilotagem.

Olhando para frente

Além da expectativa para o oval, Hauger também demonstrou entusiasmo pelo fim de semana de rodada dupla com a NASCAR no mesmo circuito, destacando a oportunidade de acompanhar a corrida da categoria no domingo como espectador.

The IndyCar championship continues this Saturday with the Good Ranchers 250 at Phoenix Raceway, marking the series’ return to the oval for the first time since 2018. Among the drivers arriving with momentum is rookie Dennis Hauger, driver of the No. 19 car for Dale Coyne Racing.

Coming off a solid 10th-place finish in his debut on the streets of St. Petersburg — where he also impressed by qualifying third — the Norwegian now faces his first major oval test in IndyCar competition.

Debut Beyond Expectations

Hauger described his St. Pete weekend as a positive start. Despite early difficulties in Practice 1, he quickly turned things around. The standout moment came in qualifying: in just his second-ever run on the alternate (soft) tires, he secured third on the grid, missing pole position by only four hundredths of a second.

“It was a bit bittersweet to be that close to pole, but it was amazing to see the team so happy. I had prepared for a long time for that moment,” he said.

In the race, finishing 10th was viewed as an important learning experience. Hauger highlighted the need to be more decisive on in-laps and out-laps during pit stops and to avoid being overly cautious on the opening laps with cold tires and brakes.

A New Challenge: The Return to Phoenix Oval

The Phoenix round presents a completely different scenario. According to Hauger, the IndyCar is significantly different from the Indy NXT machinery he previously drove: heavier, more powerful, and producing greater downforce.

During testing at the circuit, the Norwegian felt comfortable quickly. “We did race simulations and I feel good heading into qualifying. As a rookie, the goal is to gain experience and do the best possible job for the team,” he explained.

While many drivers also lack recent experience at the track, Hauger acknowledged that veterans have competed there in the past. Even so, he believes car balance and pit strategy — with more stops and refueling — will be decisive factors.

Accelerated Learning Curve

One of Hauger’s key development areas has been adapting to the working style of American teams and the dynamics of multi-stop races. He recognizes there is still room to optimize performance during pit sequences and strategic execution.

His relationship with teammate Romain Grosjean has also been a positive factor. “We work as a united team. It’s interesting to hear his feedback on the radio and understand how he adjusts the car. Of course, I want to beat him, but we both want to push the team forward,” he said.

From Formula 2 to the United States

A former Formula 3 champion with two seasons in Formula 2, Hauger chose to change direction after realizing that opportunities toward Formula 1 were limited. His move to the United States — initially through Indy NXT — was seen as a strategic fresh start.

“The F2 car didn’t feel natural to me. In Indy NXT and IndyCar, I feel more comfortable. Here you can use more physical input with the car, and there are many more adjustments available from inside the cockpit during the race,” he explained.

With greater power, hybrid technology, and aerodynamic complexity, IndyCar represents a technical challenge that better suits his driving style.

Looking Ahead

Hauger also expressed excitement about the doubleheader weekend with NASCAR at the same venue, noting he plans to stay and watch Sunday’s race live for the first time.
