O norte-americano, competindo com o carro nº 21, mostrou maturidade em apenas sua quarta corrida na categoria. Ele superou o pole position Max Taylor logo no início e controlou a prova até a bandeirada, mesmo sob pressão constante nas relargadas.

“É minha terceira vitória aqui em St. Pete, em categorias diferentes. Voltar e vencer novamente é especial”, destacou Johnson. “Às vezes parecíamos um pouco atrás nos treinos, mas sabíamos exatamente onde estávamos. Chegar como ‘azarão’, classificar bem e vencer foi um grande esforço de equipe.”

A ultrapassagem decisiva veio cedo. “Eu sabia que precisava assumir a liderança para controlar a corrida. Vi a oportunidade na curva 1 e fui para cima. Depois disso, consegui administrar”, explicou.

Além da campanha na Indy NXT, Johnson concilia compromissos na IMSA e seu programa ligado à McLaren, algo que descreveu como “surreal”. Segundo ele, a logística é organizada pelo pai e pelo agente, permitindo foco total na pilotagem.

 

Max Taylor transforma pole em pódio

Após dominar os treinos e conquistar a pole position com o carro nº 28 da Andretti Global, Max Taylor terminou em segundo lugar, garantindo seu primeiro pódio na categoria.

Apesar do bom resultado, o piloto reconheceu que a largada definiu o rumo da corrida. “Cometi um erro na saída e isso praticamente decidiu minha prova. Aqui é muito difícil ultrapassar”, afirmou. “Tentei manter a pressão no Nikita, cheguei perto algumas vezes, mas não foi suficiente.”

Taylor destacou ainda as dificuldades com a aderência da pista nas relargadas e já projeta a próxima etapa em Arlington, no Texas.

 

Tymek Kucharczyk estreia com pódio histórico

A terceira posição ficou com o polonês Tymek Kucharczyk, da HMD Motorsports (carro nº 71), que largou em quinto e avançou duas posições logo na primeira volta. Em sua estreia na Indy NXT, o piloto celebrou não apenas o pódio, mas também o fato de se tornar o primeiro polonês a competir na categoria.

“Sabia que a largada seria minha melhor chance. ‘Atirei’ o carro e funcionou”, contou, em tom descontraído. “O restante foi sobre gerenciamento de pneus e boas relargadas.”

Questionado sobre representar a Polônia, Kucharczyk demonstrou orgulho, mas reforçou que deseja trilhar seu próprio caminho. “Temos o Robert Kubica, mas quero ser o primeiro Tymek Kucharczyk, não o segundo Kubica.”

O piloto também arrancou risadas na coletiva ao comentar uma curiosidade revelada na transmissão: sua aversão à manteiga. “Não gosto. Não tocaria nisso nem com uma vara de dois metros!”, brincou. Max Taylor entrou na onda: “Eu vi um bagel com manteiga perto dele hoje cedo!”. Tymek completou: “Se colocarem manteiga na minha asa traseira, eu nem entro no carro!”

Natural da região de Gulfport, Johnson afirmou que a comemoração em casa provavelmente seria tranquila — ao menos para ele. “Provavelmente vou dormir cedo. Não sei quanto aos meus amigos e família”, disse entre risos.

The 2026 Indy NXT season kicked off in dramatic fashion on the streets of Florida. At the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Nikita Johnson claimed his first victory in the series after leading 42 laps, securing Cape Motorsports’ first-ever win in Indy NXT.

Driving the No. 21 car, Johnson displayed remarkable composure in just his fourth career start in the category. He overtook pole-sitter Max Taylor early in the race and controlled the event to the checkered flag despite constant pressure during restarts.

“This is my third win here at St. Pete in three different classes. It’s really special to come back and win again,” Johnson said. “We may have looked a little behind in practice, but we knew exactly where we stood. Coming in as the underdog, qualifying well and winning the race was a huge team effort.”

The decisive move came early. “I knew I needed to get to the front to control the race. I saw the opportunity in Turn 1 and went for it. After that, I was able to manage things.”

Johnson is balancing his Indy NXT campaign alongside an IMSA program and a McLaren-related opportunity — something he described as “surreal.” According to him, his father and agent handle the logistics so he can focus entirely on driving.

Max Taylor Turns Pole Into Podium

After dominating practice sessions and earning pole position in the No. 28 Andretti Global entry, Max Taylor finished second, securing his first podium in the series.

Despite the strong result, Taylor admitted the start defined his race. “I made a mistake at the start, and that basically set the tone. It’s really hard to pass here,” he explained. “I tried to keep the pressure on Nikita. I got close a couple of times, but it wasn’t enough.”

Taylor pointed to low grip conditions during restarts and is already focused on the next round in Arlington, Texas.

Tymek Kucharczyk Impresses in Debut

Third place went to Poland’s Tymek Kucharczyk in the No. 71 HMD Motorsports car. Starting fifth, he gained two positions on the opening lap and delivered a podium finish in his Indy NXT debut.

“I knew the start would be my best opportunity. I just sent it, and it worked,” he said with a smile. “The rest was about managing tires and executing good restarts.”

Kucharczyk became the first Polish driver to compete in Indy NXT. When asked about representing his country, he expressed pride while emphasizing his desire to build his own legacy.

“We have Robert Kubica, but I want to be the first Tymek Kucharczyk, not the second Kubica.”

The rookie also sparked laughter in the press conference after joking about his well-known dislike of butter. “I wouldn’t touch it with a two-meter stick!” he said. Taylor joined in: “I saw a bagel with butter next to him this morning!” Kucharczyk replied: “If you put butter on my rear wing, I’m not getting in the car!”

With an exciting opening round in the books, the Indy NXT field now heads to Arlington in two weeks for the next chapter of the 2026 season.
