IndyCar returned to the one-mile oval in Phoenix after a six-year absence and delivered a breathtaking spectacle in the second round of the 2026 season. Josef Newgarden, of Team Penske, took his 33rd career victory in a race full of twists and turns, lead changes and a surgical strategy in the final laps.

 

Tight lead and chaos on the track

From the start, the 250-lap race was a festival of daring. Dane Christian Rasmussen stole the show with aggressive overtakes, dictating the pace for much of the time. But the dream of victory soured when he grazed the wall and hit Will Power's car in the fight for the lead – a yellow flag that messed everything up and changed the course of the race.

Final sprint defines the king of the day

The interruption opened the doors for daring moves in the pits. Newgarden, with fresh tires, launched a furious comeback after the restart. Kyle Kirkwood took the lead for a moment, but couldn't resist the American's attack: with seven laps to go, Newgarden closed in, passed, and sped to the checkered flag, with Kirkwood in second and David Malukas completing the podium – a Penske one-two in the top 3.

The blow to the championship came early: leader Álex Palou spun and retired early on, handing the lead to Newgarden for the first time in almost four years.
