A corrida, parte da programação do Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, foi um teste de estratégia e controle. Mesmo partindo do último lugar, o piloto subiu sete posições e cruzou a linha em 17º, evitando novos incidentes em um traçado perigoso. Já Nick Monteiro teve um início promissor, disputando posições no pelotão intermediário e chegando a brigar pelo top 10. Contudo, um incidente na curva 9, na 17ª volta, encerrou sua corrida prematuramente, deixando-o na 23ª colocação final.

Apesar dos contratempos, os brasileiros mostraram que têm potencial para brigar no pelotão principal ao longo da temporada. Fittipaldi provou capacidade de recuperação, enquanto Monteiro demonstrou velocidade suficiente para o meio do grid.

The 2026 Indy NXT by Firestone season kicked off with a bang on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. What was expected to be just the starting point of a new phase for the feeder series to IndyCar ended up becoming the stage for a special victory. Nikita Johnson, a local driver, achieved his first win in the category and opened the championship with authority, in a weekend marked by the renewal of the grid and fierce disputes.

 

With the departure of established names to the main category, such as the 2025 champion, Dennis Hauger, and the Brazilian Caio Collet, Indy NXT saw its doors open to a new generation. The urban circuit, with its 1.8 miles of tight track and close walls, demanded precision from the free practice sessions onwards. The competitiveness was evident: Andretti Global and HMD Motorsports led the pace, while drivers like Max Taylor and Johnson himself were already showing that they would be in the fight for the top.

In qualifying, pole position went to Max Taylor of Andretti, who secured his first start in the lead. The young driver showed consistency and speed, but the real test would come on Sunday. Alongside Johnson on the front row, the duel promised to be intense.

Duel on the asphalt and Nikita's celebration

The race, part of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg program, was a test of strategy and control. Nikita Johnson, who already started with the support of the local crowd, knew how to manage the pace. After a direct confrontation with Taylor, the driver took the lead and never relinquished it until the checkered flag.

The result was historic: in addition to being Johnson's first victory in Indy NXT, it marked the first triumph of the Cape Motorsports team in the category. The street circuit, known for making overtaking difficult, favored those who knew how to remain calm and consistent, characteristics that the driver demonstrated in abundance.

Brazilians: recovery and challenges

While the celebrations were happening on the podium, Brazilians Enzo Fittipaldi and Nick Monteiro faced a weekend of highs and lows at the traditional Florida circuit.

In free practice, both showed signs of competitiveness. Fittipaldi even featured among the fastest, finishing one of the sessions in sixth place, while Monteiro finished the practice in ninth place. However, qualifying brought a setback for the group. Enzo Fittipaldi suffered an accident at the beginning of the session, touching the wall and damaging the suspension. Without time to correct the car, the Brazilian was forced to start in the last position on the grid.

Nick Monteiro, in turn, kept a cool head and secured 11th place, staying just outside the top 10.

In the 42-lap race, Fittipaldi delivered one of the most remarkable recovery races of the weekend. Even starting from last place, the driver climbed seven positions and crossed the line in 17th, avoiding further incidents on a dangerous track. Nick Monteiro had a promising start, battling for positions in the midfield and even fighting for a top 10 finish. However, an incident at turn 9 on lap 17 prematurely ended his race, leaving him in 23rd place overall.

Looking to the future

Despite the setbacks, the Brazilians showed that they have the potential to fight in the main pack throughout the season. Fittipaldi proved his ability to recover, while Monteiro demonstrated enough speed for the middle of the grid.

With the grid renewed and the 2026 title race promising to be one of the most balanced in recent years, Indy NXT moves forward. The next stage takes place on the streets of Arlington, Texas, and should continue to reveal the new protagonists of the category. If St. Petersburg was an indication, the season promises to be marked by close duels and surprises at every stage.
