A NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series viveu um capítulo inédito no fim da semana do GP do Circuito de Rua de São Petersburgo. Pela primeira vez em sua história, a categoria de picapes disputou uma prova em circuito de rua, marcando a terceira etapa da temporada 2026. A prova, batizada de OnlyBulls Green Flag 150, terminou com uma vitória de Layne Riggs, que conseguiu gerenciar o combustível e capitalizar um erro de adversário para a linha de chegada na frente.

A disputa ocorreu no tradicional traçado urbano de 1,8 milhas e 14 curvas, pista que também sedia a IndyCar Series. Para as picapes, acostumadas aos ovais, o desafio foi imediato: um cenário de pista estreita, com pouca área de fuga e frenagens críticas, onde ultrapassagens são naturalmente mais difíceis.

Adaptação e classificação

O fim de semana começou com dificuldades. A única sessão de treinos livres foi encurtada pelo mau tempo, limitando o tempo de pista para que as equipes se adaptem ao novo cenário. The Front Row Motorsports driver led 41 laps and secured victory in the OnlyBulls Green Flag 150 after a race marked by fuel strategy and an opponent's mistake.

 

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series experienced an unprecedented chapter at the end of the St. Petersburg Street Circuit GP week. For the first time in its history, the pickup truck category competed in a race on a street circuit, marking the third stage of the 2026 season. The race, named the OnlyBulls Green Flag 150, ended with a victory for Layne Riggs, who managed his fuel and capitalized on an opponent's mistake to cross the finish line first.

 

The race took place on the traditional 1.8-mile, 14-turn urban track, which also hosts the IndyCar Series. For the pickup trucks, accustomed to ovals, the challenge was immediate: a narrow track scenario, with little run-off area and critical braking points, where overtaking is naturally more difficult.

Adaptation and qualifying

The weekend started with difficulties. The only free practice session was shortened by bad weather, limiting track time for teams to adapt to the new scenario. Even with the limited time available, Kaden Honeycutt, from Tricon Garage, set the fastest time of the session (1min18s922), demonstrating that the Toyota was on the right track.

In qualifying, Connor Mosack secured pole position for Spire Motorsports. The driver led the first laps of the race, but the initial pace did not hold until the end.

A great recovery

The race, contested over 80 laps, was marked by nine lead changes between five different drivers and several yellow flags, reflecting the technical difficulty of the circuit. However, the absolute highlight was the performance of Layne Riggs.

Starting from 28th position, the Front Row Motorsports driver staged one of the greatest comebacks of the season. After finishing Phase 1 in seventh and winning Phase 2, Riggs took control in the final stretch. He led 41 laps, most of the race, and secured the ultimate victory after a mistake by Ty Majeski, who went off the track while leading on lap 62.

The final duel

In the strategic laps, Riggs had to manage fuel consumption while being pressured by two ThorSport Racing drivers: Ty Majeski and Ben Rhodes. Even with his tank at the limit, the driver managed to defend his position and crossed the finish line with less than a second advantage.

Connection with IndyCar

The stage also served as a meeting point between the categories. The event featured the presence of IndyCar legends, such as three-time champion Dario Franchitti and former driver and commentator James Hinchcliffe.

Hinchcliffe, in fact, entered the track and finished within the top 10, reinforcing the connection between NASCAR and the traditional IndyCar weekend in St. Pete.

Legacy of the debut

The debut of the pickup trucks on the streets of St. Petersburg was a positive surprise, delivering fierce disputes and overtaking maneuvers that many doubted would be possible on such a tight track.
