Após deixar Detroit com mais um resultado sólido e manter-se na disputa pelas primeiras posições do campeonato da NTT IndyCar Series, Pato O'Ward chega ao Worldwide Technology Raceway, em Gateway, determinado a transformar a consistência demonstrada ao longo da temporada em vitórias.

Durante coletiva de imprensa realizada antes da décima edição do Bommarito Automotive Group 500, o mexicano da Arrow McLaren abordou diversos temas, desde o desempenho da equipe em 2026 até as mudanças técnicas que estrearão neste fim de semana, passando pela disputa com Honda, a luta pelo campeonato e até sua definição pessoal de sucesso.

Atualmente ocupando a quinta posição na classificação geral, O'Ward soma seis resultados entre os cinco primeiros colocados nesta temporada. Apesar dos números positivos, o piloto acredita que ainda falta um passo importante para que a Arrow McLaren volte a disputar vitórias de forma consistente.

"Temos sido competitivos na maioria dos finais de semana. Estamos sempre na briga, mas ainda falta aquele pequeno detalhe para transformar boas corridas em vitórias e pódios. Sinto que estamos cada vez mais próximos", afirmou.

Gateway segue sendo uma das pistas favoritas de O'Ward

O oval de Gateway tem sido historicamente uma das melhores pistas para Pato O'Ward. O mexicano já conquistou cinco pódios no circuito e terminou em segundo lugar na edição do ano passado.

Para ele, o traçado localizado próximo a St. Louis possui características únicas dentro do calendário da IndyCar.

"Embora seja classificado como um oval curto, eu não o vejo dessa forma. Ainda é uma pista muito rápida. As corridas costumam ser espetaculares e a disputa lado a lado que vimos no ano passado foi uma das mais impressionantes da temporada."

Outro fator que agrada ao piloto são as condições da corrida noturna.

"As corridas à noite são sempre especiais. O visual é incrível, a temperatura cai e isso normalmente melhora a qualidade das disputas."

Arrow McLaren vive fase de transformação

Questionado sobre a dificuldade da equipe em converter velocidade em vitórias, O'Ward apontou que a Arrow McLaren ainda passa por um período de adaptação após diversas mudanças internas realizadas nos últimos meses.

Segundo ele, as alterações de pessoal e a mudança para uma nova sede durante a offseason trouxeram desafios naturais para o funcionamento do programa.

"Uma equipe é formada por muitas pessoas. Não é apenas o piloto ou o engenheiro. Quando você muda mecânicos e outras funções importantes, leva tempo para que todos criem sintonia. Às vezes parece que demos um passo para trás, mas isso faz parte de uma transformação necessária para dar um salto maior no futuro."

O mexicano também fez questão de destacar o trabalho liderado por Tony Kanaan e Zak Brown na estrutura da equipe.

"Ninguém está faltando com esforço. Todos estão trabalhando extremamente duro. Sabemos onde queremos chegar e entendemos que algumas mudanças levam tempo para produzir resultados."

Honda leva vantagem, mas Chevrolet segue trabalhando

Um dos assuntos mais comentados após Detroit foi o domínio da Honda, que ocupou todo o pódio na corrida disputada nas ruas da cidade americana.

Ao ser questionado sobre a diferença entre os fabricantes, O'Ward reconheceu que a Honda possui vantagem neste momento, especialmente em circuitos urbanos.

"A Honda tem estado muito forte. Eles são um grande concorrente. No entanto, a Chevrolet tem sido muito aberta e colaborativa em tudo que pedimos. Tivemos diversas reuniões para identificar onde precisamos evoluir."

Apesar da situação atual, o mexicano acredita que a recuperação é possível.

"Eles têm uma vantagem agora, mas isso não significa que não possamos alcançá-los. Essa rivalidade sempre foi muito equilibrada."

Novo pacote aerodinâmico gera expectativa e dúvidas

Uma das grandes novidades para Gateway será a estreia de um novo pacote aerodinâmico combinado com pneus atualizados da Firestone.

O problema é que praticamente ninguém sabe exatamente o que esperar.

Segundo O'Ward, os pilotos sequer tiveram a oportunidade de realizar testes prévios com a nova configuração.

"Honestamente, não sabemos o que esperar. Não testamos esse pacote. Minha esperança é que as mudanças tenham sido feitas para melhorar ainda mais a qualidade das corridas."

O mexicano acredita que as primeiras sessões do fim de semana serão fundamentais.

"No primeiro treino vamos precisar aprender o máximo possível em pouco tempo. Neste momento ninguém possui respostas."

Críticas ao uso do Push-to-Pass nas relargadas

Outro tema importante da coletiva foi a recente alteração na regulamentação do Push-to-Pass após as polêmicas ocorridas durante o mês de maio.

Embora considere a regra mais clara atualmente, O'Ward acredita que permitir o uso do sistema nas relargadas não foi uma decisão acertada.

"Todos acabam usando seus segundos extras ao mesmo tempo. Em algumas corridas já consumimos mais da metade do Push-to-Pass apenas nas relargadas."

Para o piloto, isso reduz as possibilidades estratégicas durante os momentos mais importantes da corrida.

"Você acaba ficando sem recursos justamente durante as janelas de pit stop, onde muitas vezes acontecem as melhores disputas."

A perseguição a Alex Palou continua

Com a temporada se aproximando da metade, o principal objetivo de O'Ward segue sendo reduzir a diferença para os líderes do campeonato, especialmente para o atual dominante Alex Palou.

O piloto reconheceu que os rivais têm executado um trabalho superior ao da Arrow McLaren até agora.

"Eles fizeram um trabalho melhor do que nós praticamente em todos os lugares. Precisamos elevar nosso nível."

Para isso, ele acredita que apenas bons resultados não serão suficientes.

"Os finais de semana perfeitos precisam terminar em vitórias e pódios. Apenas chegar entre os cinco primeiros não será suficiente para lutar pelo campeonato."

Futuro segue na IndyCar

Em meio às especulações sobre contratos e oportunidades em outras categorias, O'Ward deixou clara sua posição sobre o futuro.

Apesar de já ter experimentado carros da Fórmula 1 e de protótipos, o mexicano garantiu que sua prioridade continua sendo a IndyCar.

"Não tenho interesse em outras categorias. A IndyCar é minha série favorita, é onde sou feliz e onde quero estar."

After leaving Detroit with another solid result and remaining in contention near the top of the NTT IndyCar Series standings, Pato O'Ward heads to Worldwide Technology Raceway in Gateway determined to turn the consistency he has shown throughout the season into victories.

During a press conference ahead of the 10th edition of the Bommarito Automotive Group 500, the Arrow McLaren driver discussed a wide range of topics, including the team's performance in 2026, the technical changes debuting this weekend, the battle against Honda, the championship fight, and even his personal definition of success.

Currently sitting fifth in the championship standings, O'Ward has recorded six top-five finishes this season. Despite the positive results, the Mexican believes there is still one important step missing before Arrow McLaren can consistently compete for victories.

"We've been competitive on most weekends. We're always in the fight, but we're still missing that little extra to turn strong races into wins and podiums. I feel like we're getting closer every time," he said.

Gateway Remains One of O'Ward's Favorite Tracks

Gateway has historically been one of Pato O'Ward's strongest venues. The Mexican driver has collected five podium finishes at the oval and finished runner-up in last year's race.

For O'Ward, the track located just outside St. Louis offers unique characteristics within the IndyCar calendar.

"Even though it's classified as a short oval, I don't really see it that way. It's still a very fast track. The racing is usually spectacular, and the side-by-side action we saw last year was some of the best of the season."

Another aspect he enjoys is the night-race atmosphere.

"Night races are always special. They look incredible, temperatures drop, and that usually makes for even better racing."

According to him, personnel changes and the move into a new headquarters during the offseason have naturally created challenges.

"A team is made up of a lot of people. It's not just the driver or the engineer. When you change mechanics and other key personnel, it takes time for everyone to build chemistry. Sometimes it feels like we've taken a step backward, but that's part of a transformation that can eventually lead to a much bigger step forward."

The Mexican also praised the leadership of Tony Kanaan and Zak Brown.

"No one is lacking effort. Everyone is working extremely hard. We know where we want to be, and we understand that some changes take time before they produce results."

Honda Holds the Advantage, but Chevrolet Keeps Working

One of the biggest talking points after Detroit was Honda's dominance, as the manufacturer swept the podium on the streets of the Motor City.

When asked about the difference between the manufacturers, O'Ward acknowledged Honda's current edge, particularly on street circuits.

"Honda has been very strong. They're a great competitor. At the same time, Chevrolet has been very open and collaborative with everything we've asked for. We've had several meetings to identify where we need to improve."

Despite the current situation, he believes the gap can be closed.

"They have the advantage right now, but that doesn't mean we can't catch them. This rivalry has always been very competitive."

New Aerodynamic Package Brings Excitement and Uncertainty

One of the biggest storylines heading into Gateway is the introduction of a new aerodynamic package combined with updated Firestone tires.

The challenge, however, is that almost nobody knows exactly what to expect.

According to O'Ward, drivers have not had the opportunity to test the new package beforehand.

"Honestly, we don't know what to expect. We haven't tested this package. My hope is that these changes were made to make the racing even better."

The Arrow McLaren driver believes the opening sessions of the weekend will be crucial.

"In the first practice, we're going to have to learn as much as possible in a very short amount of time. Right now, nobody really has the answers."

O'Ward Questions Push-to-Pass Usage on Restarts

Another important topic during the press conference was the recent clarification of the Push-to-Pass regulations following the controversies seen during the Month of May.

While he believes the rule is now clearer, O'Ward feels allowing drivers to use Push-to-Pass on restarts was not the right decision.

"Everyone ends up using their extra power at the same time. In some races, we've already burned through more than half of our Push-to-Pass allocation just on restarts."

In his view, this limits strategic opportunities during the most critical moments of a race.

"You end up with very little left during pit-stop cycles, which is often where some of the best racing happens."

The Chase for Alex Palou Continues

As the season approaches its halfway point, O'Ward's primary goal remains reducing the gap to the championship leaders, especially series frontrunner Alex Palou.

The Mexican openly admitted that his rivals have executed better than Arrow McLaren so far this season.

"They've done a better job than we have in almost every area. We need to raise our level."

To do that, he believes strong finishes alone will not be enough.

"Perfect weekends need to end with wins and podiums. Just finishing in the top five won't be enough if we want to fight for the championship."

IndyCar Remains the Future

Amid speculation about contract negotiations and possible opportunities in other racing categories, O'Ward made his future intentions very clear.

Despite having experience in Formula 1 testing and prototype machinery, the Mexican reaffirmed that IndyCar remains his priority.

"I have no interest in other categories. IndyCar is my favorite series, it's where I'm happy, and it's where I want to be."
