IMSA em Virginia: Lamborghini vence, Winward vira o campeonato e reta final ganha novos protagonistas

A etapa da IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship em Virginia International Raceway entregou muito mais do que uma disputa entre carros GT3. A Michelin GT Challenge at VIR foi um dos momentos mais importantes da reta final da temporada 2026, principalmente pelas consequências que deixou nas disputas pelos títulos de GTD PRO e GTD.

Sem a presença dos protótipos GTP e LMP2, a etapa teve uma configuração diferente do habitual. Apenas os carros das classes GTD PRO e GTD dividiram a pista, colocando os GT3 como protagonistas absolutos durante as 84 voltas da corrida.

Lamborghini confirma evolução com vitória da Pfaff

A etapa começou com um momento histórico para a Lamborghini. Andrea Caldarelli colocou o Lamborghini Temerario GT3 #9 na pole position com 1min44s773, garantindo a primeira pole global do novo carro em competição.

O desempenho da Pfaff Motorsports não ficou restrito à classificação.

Ao lado de Sandy Mitchell, Caldarelli controlou grande parte da corrida e manteve o Lamborghini na liderança durante 69 das 84 voltas. A equipe também mostrou eficiência nas paradas de box, conseguindo preservar a primeira posição mesmo durante os ciclos de pit stops.

No final, o #9 cruzou a linha de chegada com pouco mais de 1,5 segundo de vantagem sobre o Ford Mustang GT3 #64, de Dennis Olsen e Ben Barker.

Ford coloca dois carros no pódio

O Mustang GT3 #64 terminou na segunda posição, enquanto o #65, de Christopher Mies e Frédéric Vervisch, completou o pódio.

O desempenho do #65 merece destaque. O carro largou apenas na nona posição e ganhou seis posições ao longo da corrida, mostrando uma combinação eficiente de ritmo e estratégia.

A dobradinha da Ford no pódio também reforçou a competitividade do Mustang GT3 na reta final da temporada.

Apesar disso, o campeonato GTD PRO continua tendo o BMW #1 da Paul Miller Racing como referência. Connor De Phillippi e Neil Verhagen terminaram em quinto e conseguiram preservar a liderança, embora agora com uma margem muito menor.

A dupla deixou VIR com 23 pontos de vantagem sobre Nicky Catsburg e Tommy Milner, enquanto Caldarelli e Mitchell passaram a ocupar a terceira posição, 56 pontos atrás dos líderes.

O Aston Martin Vantage GT3 #27 da Heart of Racing, com Tom Gamble e Dudu Barrichello, chegou a assumir a liderança durante a parte final da prova.

Mas a Winward Racing tinha outra estratégia.

Philip Ellis, pilotando o Mercedes-AMG GT3 #57, conseguiu reduzir progressivamente a diferença e chegou ao Aston Martin nos minutos finais.

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship's visit to Virginia International Raceway delivered much more than a battle between GT3 cars. The Michelin GT Challenge at VIR became one of the most important moments of the 2026 season, particularly because of its impact on the GTD PRO and GTD championship battles.

Without the GTP and LMP2 prototypes, the Virginia round had a very different configuration from most IMSA races. Only GTD PRO and GTD cars shared the track, putting the GT3 machinery completely in the spotlight.

The result was a race in which strategy, pace and tire management became even more important. The weekend began with a historic moment for Lamborghini.

Andrea Caldarelli put the Pfaff Motorsports Lamborghini Temerario GT3 #9 on pole position with a 1:44.773 lap, securing the new car's first global pole position in competition.

Pfaff's performance, however, did not stop there.

Sharing the car with Sandy Mitchell, Caldarelli controlled much of the race, with the Lamborghini leading 69 of the 84 laps. The team was also highly efficient during pit stops, allowing the #9 to maintain the lead throughout the pit-stop cycles.

At the finish, the Lamborghini crossed the line just over 1.5 seconds ahead of the #64 Ford Mustang GT3 of Dennis Olsen and Ben Barker.

It was Pfaff Motorsports' second consecutive victory after its Road America triumph and an especially significant result for Lamborghini, which returned to victory in the WeatherTech Championship at VIR for the first time since 2017.

More than an isolated win, the result confirmed that the Temerario GT3 has reached the decisive phase of the championship capable of fighting directly with the leading manufacturers.

Ford puts two cars on the podium

While Lamborghini controlled the race, Ford also enjoyed one of its strongest weekends of the season.

The #64 Mustang GT3 finished second, while the #65 car of Christopher Mies and Frédéric Vervisch completed the podium.

The performance of the #65 deserves particular attention. The car started from ninth position and gained six places during the race, combining strong pace with an effective strategy.

Ford's double podium finish further reinforced the Mustang GT3's competitiveness heading into the final stages of the season.

Despite that performance, the GTD PRO championship remains led by the #1 BMW from Paul Miller Racing. Connor De Phillippi and Neil Verhagen finished fifth and retained the championship lead, although their advantage has been significantly reduced.

The duo left Virginia with a 23-point advantage over Nicky Catsburg and Tommy Milner, while Caldarelli and Mitchell moved into third, 56 points behind the leaders.

In other words, Pfaff's victory did more than boost the team's confidence. It put the Lamborghini firmly into the championship fight.

GTD turns Virginia into a championship turning point

If GTD PRO produced a more controlled race, the GTD class delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the weekend.

The #27 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 from Heart of Racing, driven by Tom Gamble and Dudu Barrichello, took the lead during the closing stages.

But Winward Racing had a different plan.

Philip Ellis, driving the #57 Mercedes-AMG GT3, gradually closed the gap and reached the Aston Martin with only minutes remaining.

The battle between the two cars reached its limit when Ellis attempted the pass. Contact followed, and Gamble was subsequently given a drive-through penalty, handing the lead to Winward.

Pfaff Motorsports delivered an almost perfect weekend: pole position, race lead and victory. For Lamborghini, the result represents another step in establishing the Temerario GT3 as a genuine contender for wins and potentially the championship.

Winward Racing, meanwhile, produced the most impressive turnaround of the weekend.

Going from approximately 300 points behind to championship leaders in only a few rounds is more than simply a strong run of results. It demonstrates how quickly the competitive order in IMSA can change when a team finds the right combination of pace, strategy and execution at the decisive moment.

For Dudu Barrichello, the situation now demands a response. Losing the championship lead increases the pressure on the Heart of Racing duo, but the deficit remains manageable.

And that is exactly what makes the final stretch of the 2026 IMSA season so compelling.

Virginia did not decide the championships.

Virginia reopened them.

With two rounds remaining, both the GTD PRO and GTD titles enter their decisive phase with new protagonists, tight margins and very little room for error.

The next battle will take place at Indianapolis, where the leading contenders will have another opportunity to reshape the championship before the season finale.
