Cadillac mantém a liderança do campeonato

Winward mantém a disputa aberta

Enquanto o Battle on the Bricks teve 2h40 de duração, o Motul Petit Le Mans, em Road Atlanta, terá dez horas.

Agora, a diferença será a distância.

Road Atlanta será a decisão.
IMSA at Indianapolis: BMW Wins Late as Championship Heads to Road Atlanta Finale

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted the penultimate round of the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, in a race that combined strategy, intense battles and important championship implications.

The TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks featured a 2-hour, 40-minute race and brought together the four championship classes — GTP, LMP2, GTD PRO and GTD — for another highly competitive weekend on the iconic Indianapolis road course.

The biggest story of the weekend came from BMW M Team WRT, which secured its first IMSA victory with the #24 BMW M Hybrid V8 driven by Sheldon van der Linde and Dries Vanthoor.

Beyond deciding the race winners, Indianapolis set the stage for a major championship finale at the Motul Petit Le Mans in Road Atlanta.
BMW Secures Its First IMSA Victory

The race began with the #60 Acura ARX-06 from Meyer Shank Racing starting from pole position, with Tom Blomqvist behind the wheel. Acura's qualifying performance suggested that the GTP battle would be closely contested among the leading manufacturers.

As the race progressed, however, the picture changed.

The #31 Cadillac Racing entry, driven by Earl Bamber and Jack Aitken, moved into contention for the overall victory. The Cadillac reached the closing stages at the front of the field, while the #24 BMW remained within striking distance.

The decisive moment came with just over five minutes remaining.

Sheldon van der Linde attacked Earl Bamber at Turn 12, placing the BMW down the inside of the Cadillac and taking the lead.

From there, BMW had to manage the gap until the checkered flag.

Van der Linde and Vanthoor crossed the finish line in first place, approximately 2.9 seconds ahead of the #31 Cadillac.

The result marked the first IMSA victory for BMW M Team WRT, an important milestone for the team's American sports car program.
Cadillac Maintains Championship Lead

Although the #31 Cadillac missed out on the victory in the closing minutes, its second-place finish was extremely important for the championship.

Jack Aitken entered Indianapolis as the points leader and left the event still at the top of the standings.

The runner-up finish allowed Aitken to maintain a significant advantage over Laurin Heinrich, who finished third with Kevin Estre in the #6 Porsche Penske Motorsport entry.

Following Indianapolis, Aitken holds a 147-point advantage over Heinrich in the drivers' championship.

The #6 Porsche's podium was also significant. After a period without a top-three finish, the result gave Heinrich valuable points and kept his championship hopes alive heading into the final round.

That makes Road Atlanta even more important for the GTP championship.
A Race Decided by the Details

Indianapolis also demonstrated how a 2-hour, 40-minute race requires a very different strategic approach from a traditional endurance event.

With less time available, teams had fewer opportunities to recover from mistakes or an ineffective strategy.

Every pit stop, tire decision, fuel calculation and traffic situation carried significant importance.

BMW managed to combine those elements effectively and, most importantly, was ready to take advantage of the opportunity that appeared in the closing stages.

Van der Linde's pass on Bamber was the decisive moment, but the result was built throughout the entire 2-hour, 40-minute race.
Era Motorsport Wins in LMP2

LMP2 also produced an interesting strategic battle at Indianapolis.

The #18 Era Motorsport, driven by Nick Boulle and Christian Rasmussen, took the class victory after a race in which fuel management played an important role.

While some of the main championship contenders encountered difficulties, Era Motorsport executed an efficient strategy and converted that opportunity into an important win.

The result also affected the championship battle.

Inter Europol Competition remains at the top of the standings, but the gap to CrowdStrike Racing by APR remains small.

Other championship contenders, including AO Racing, also had a difficult weekend, leaving the LMP2 title fight wide open heading into Road Atlanta.

With the finale scheduled for ten hours, the class could see several changes in momentum before the championship is decided.
Ford Wins an Intense GTD PRO Battle

GTD PRO produced one of the closest battles of the Indianapolis weekend.

The #64 Ford Mustang GT3, driven by Dennis Olsen and Ben Barker, went head-to-head with the #4 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R of Nicky Catsburg and Tommy Milner in a battle that lasted almost until the checkered flag.

Ford managed to hold off the Corvette and take the class victory.

The two cars made contact during their battle, leading race control to review the incident. After the review, no additional penalty was issued.

The victory was another important result for Ford at Indianapolis, especially considering that the manufacturer also won the previous edition of the event.

The #9 Pfaff Motorsports Lamborghini Temerario GT3 completed the GTD PRO podium.
Turner Motorsport Completes a Major GTD Recovery

GTD produced one of the biggest comebacks of the weekend.

The #96 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 EVO, driven by Patrick Gallagher and Robby Foley, won the class after starting the race in a difficult position.

The BMW had qualified near the front, but a penalty related to a pre-grid infraction forced the team to start from the back of the field.

In a relatively short race, recovering enough positions to fight for victory was a major challenge.

Turner Motorsport, however, executed an effective strategy and steadily moved through the field.

The #96 BMW eventually took the GTD victory, beating the #57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3, driven by Philip Ellis and Russell Ward.

The gap between the two cars was just 0.501 seconds.

The result made Turner's Indianapolis performance one of the most impressive stories of the weekend.
Winward Keeps the Championship Fight Open

Winward Racing arrived at Indianapolis leading the GTD championship.

The pre-grid penalty, however, put the #57 Mercedes-AMG in a difficult position before the race even began.

Despite starting at the back, the team managed to recover through the field and finish second.

The result was not enough to turn the championship lead into a race victory, but it demonstrated the team's ability to recover under difficult circumstances.

With the season approaching its final round, every point becomes increasingly important.

The GTD championship therefore remains open heading into Road Atlanta.
Indianapolis Sets Up a Ten-Hour Finale

Indianapolis was the penultimate race of the season and served as a final preparation for the championship-deciding event.

While the Battle on the Bricks lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes, the Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta will run for ten hours.

That difference completely changes the dynamics of the race.

At Road Atlanta, teams will once again have to deal with a long endurance event, multi-class traffic, changing temperatures, tire degradation, fuel consumption, multiple pit stops and the challenge of keeping the car competitive throughout the entire distance.

Reliability will also become one of the most important factors.

A small issue in a 2-hour, 40-minute race can sometimes be managed. In a ten-hour endurance race, however, any problem can cost positions — and potentially a championship.
What Indianapolis Left for the Championship

The Indianapolis round showed that the IMSA season is reaching its most important stage with several championship battles still open.

In GTP, Jack Aitken arrives at the finale with an advantage over Laurin Heinrich, while Cadillac and Porsche remain involved in the title fight.

In LMP2, the gap between the leading contenders remains small.

In GTD PRO, the battle between the manufacturers continues, while GTD heads into the finale with the championship still open.

Indianapolis also demonstrated the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity.

BMW M Team WRT turned a close battle in the final minutes into its first IMSA victory. Era Motorsport used its strategy to win LMP2. Ford held off Chevrolet in GTD PRO. And Turner Motorsport went from the back of the grid to victory in GTD.

Four classes. Four very different stories.
Road Atlanta Will Decide It All

Only one round remains in the 2026 season.

The Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta will be a ten-hour race and will determine the champions of the 2026 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Indianapolis showed that no position can be considered safe until the checkered flag.

Now, the difference will be distance.

From a short and intense race to ten hours of endurance competition, the championship heads into its final battle with everything ready to be decided on track.

Indianapolis was the penultimate battle. Road Atlanta will be the decider.
