Quantas escolhas existem no Draft?
O Draft possui duas rodadas.
“Pick 5 — Los Angeles Clippers, via Indiana Pacers”
Primeira rodada x segunda rodada
As duas rodadas possuem algumas diferenças importantes.
A equipe A teve a pior campanha.
A equipe B terminou logo acima.
1️⃣ Primeira rodada: escolhas 1 a 30.
2️⃣ Segunda rodada: escolhas 31 a 60.

How Does the NBA Draft Work?
If you are just starting to follow the NBA, you have probably heard about the NBA Draft. But what exactly does it mean, and why is it so important to NBA teams?
The NBA Draft is the process through which franchises select new players who can enter the league. It is one of the main mechanisms used by the NBA to distribute new talent among its teams and give franchises an opportunity to add players who can become part of their future.
But the process is more complicated than simply choosing the best players available.
What Is the NBA Draft?
The Draft is an annual event in which NBA teams select players who are eligible to enter the league.
Many prospects come from college basketball in the United States, while others come from professional leagues around the world or different development programs.
The basic idea is simple: teams select players in a predetermined order, and each franchise can use its picks to add new talent to its roster.
However, the order is not the same for every team.
That is where the Draft Lottery comes in.
How Is the Draft Order Determined?
Traditionally, a team's position in the regular-season standings influences its Draft position.
Teams that do not qualify for the Playoffs enter the Lottery, while the remaining positions in the first round are determined according to the reverse order of the regular-season standings.
This means that, under the traditional system, teams with worse records have better chances of receiving a higher Draft pick.
But having the worst record does not automatically guarantee the first overall pick.
There is a lottery.
What Is the NBA Draft Lottery?
The NBA Draft Lottery is the process used to determine the first selections in the Draft.
Under the system used through the 2026 Draft, the 14 teams that did not qualify for the Playoffs participated in the Lottery. The first four picks were determined through the Lottery, while the remaining Lottery teams followed according to their regular-season records.
The teams also had different odds of receiving the first overall pick.
For the 2026 Lottery, for example, the Washington Wizards, Indiana Pacers and Brooklyn Nets each had a 14% chance of receiving the first pick. The odds then decreased for teams with better records.
So, finishing with the worst record did not automatically mean getting the No. 1 pick.
What Changes Starting With the 2027 Draft?
This is an important change for anyone following the 2026-27 season.
The NBA approved a new Lottery system called the “3-2-1 Lottery”, which will be used beginning with the 2027 NBA Draft.
The new system expands the Lottery from 14 to 16 teams. It will include teams that do not qualify for either the Playoffs or the Play-In Tournament.
The Lottery will also use a different distribution of combinations. According to the NBA, the new system is designed to reduce incentives for teams to intentionally pursue a lower position in the standings in order to improve their Draft position.
That means the 2027 Draft will have a different Lottery system from the one used in previous years.
How Many Picks Are There in the NBA Draft?
The Draft has two rounds.
Each round originally contains 30 selections, for a total of 60 picks.
The first round includes picks 1 through 30, while the second round includes picks 31 through 60.
The two-round format has been in place since 1989.
However, teams do not necessarily enter the Draft with exactly one pick in each round.
Why?
Because Draft picks can be traded.
Can Draft Picks Be Traded?
Yes.
Draft picks can be included in trades between NBA franchises.
For example, a team can trade a future Draft pick in order to acquire a player from another team.
A franchise can also enter the Draft with multiple picks in the same round or with no pick at all.
That happened in the 2026 Draft, when some teams had multiple first-round selections while others did not have a first-round pick.
This is why you may see something like:
“Pick No. 5 — Los Angeles Clippers, via Indiana Pacers.”
That means Indiana originally owned the pick, but the selection was traded and became part of the Clippers' Draft assets.
First Round vs. Second Round
The two rounds have some important differences.
In the first round, teams have more time to make their selections, and players selected in this round receive contracts under specific NBA rules.
In the second round, selections happen more quickly and contracts operate differently, giving teams greater flexibility when negotiating with players.
That does not mean the second round is unimportant.
Quite the opposite.
Great Players Can Come From the Second Round
Some of the NBA's most successful players were selected outside the first round.
Examples include Nikola Jokić, Draymond Green, Manu Ginóbili and Jalen Brunson.
According to the NBA, since 1989, 22 second-round selections have gone on to be selected to at least one All-Star Game.
This shows that a player's Draft position does not necessarily determine the size or success of their career.
A late pick can become one of the biggest discoveries of an entire Draft class.
Who Can Enter the Draft?
Players must meet the NBA's eligibility requirements.
The pool includes American and international players who meet the league's age, education and declaration requirements.
International prospects also have specific eligibility rules that differ from those applied to players coming through the American high school and college basketball system.
Before the Draft itself, prospects can participate in workouts, interviews and events such as the NBA Draft Combine, where teams can evaluate different aspects of their game and physical profile.
What Happens on Draft Night?
On Draft night, teams make their selections one at a time.
The commissioner announces the player's name and, from that point, the prospect officially becomes part of the process of joining the NBA through the franchise that selected him.
In recent years, the Draft has been held over two days.
In 2026, for example, the first round took place on June 23 and the second round on June 24 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Teams also have a time limit for each selection: five minutes in the first round and four minutes in the second round.
Does Being the No. 1 Pick Mean a Player Is the Best?
Not necessarily.
The first overall pick receives enormous attention because it gives a franchise the first opportunity to select from the available prospects.
But the Draft is based on projections.
Teams evaluate technical, physical and tactical characteristics, as well as a player's development potential and how he could fit into the franchise's system.
That means Draft position does not determine future success.
A player selected near the top of the Draft may not meet expectations, while another player selected much later can develop into a star.
Why Is the Draft Important for NBA Teams?
The Draft is an important tool for building a roster.
A franchise can use a pick to find a player who becomes an immediate contributor.
Another team may select a young prospect with long-term development in mind.
Draft picks also have value in the trade market.
A future pick can become part of a trade even before anyone knows which player will eventually be selected with it.
The Draft and Rebuilding
You will also hear the term “rebuild” frequently when following NBA teams.
When a franchise is rebuilding, high Draft picks can become important assets for finding young talent and creating a new foundation for the roster.
But the Lottery exists precisely because the worst regular-season record does not automatically guarantee the first overall pick.
The system gives teams with weaker records a greater opportunity to move up while preventing the lowest position in the standings from guaranteeing the top selection.
A Simple Example
Imagine four teams finish outside the Playoffs and are eligible for the Lottery.
Team A has the worst record.
Team B finishes just above them.
Team C has a slightly better record.
And Team D has the best record among the four.
Team A will have a better chance of receiving a high pick, but it is not guaranteed to receive the first overall selection.
After the Lottery determines the order, the teams begin making their selections.
And there is another important detail: the pick may have been traded previously.
So the team making a selection is not necessarily the team that originally owned the pick.
The Draft Is Only the Beginning
Being selected in the NBA is a huge moment in any player's career, but development does not end on Draft night.
It is only the beginning of a new stage.
The player has to earn a place on the roster, adjust to the pace of the NBA, learn the team's system and compete for playing time in one of the most competitive basketball leagues in the world.
For franchises, the work continues as well.
The player selected needs to be developed and integrated into the team's long-term plans.
That is why the Draft should not be viewed simply as a two-day event.
It is part of a much larger process of building tea
