Ferrari #51 vive o outro lado do endurance

O Circuit of The Americas possui características bastante particulares.

LMGT3: Aston Martin conquista a vitória

Eduardo Barrichello volta a brilhar

O impacto no campeonato

A estratégia funcionou. O ritmo estava presente.

E a Ferrari aproveitou.

A evolução no circuito é clara.

Então veio a falha hidráulica.

WEC: Ferrari wins at COTA after Toyota drama
Ferrari claims its first victory of 2026 after a race controlled by Toyota, while Aston Martin triumphs in LMGT3 and the championship battle approaches its limit

The Lone Star Le Mans, the fifth round of the 2026 World Endurance Championship, delivered exactly what makes the WEC so unpredictable: a race that appeared to be decided changed completely in the final minutes.

At the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, Toyota #7 controlled much of the second half of the six-hour race. The trio of Nyck de Vries, Kamui Kobayashi and Mike Conway built a comfortable advantage and appeared to be heading toward a victory that had escaped the manufacturer in its previous appearances at the circuit.

But an endurance race only ends when the checkered flag falls. With approximately 11 minutes remaining, a hydraulic failure forced Toyota #7 to retire while the car was leading by around six seconds.

The lead immediately passed to the AF Corse Ferrari #50, taking Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen to victory. It was Ferrari's first win of the 2026 season and a result that could have important consequences for the championship.
Ferrari turns a difficult race into victory

Ferrari's victory did not come through absolute dominance. Instead, the team had to build its result over six hours and remain close to the leaders while Toyota took control during the final stages.

The #50 started the race with an aggressive strategy. Miguel Molina moved from fifth to third in the opening laps, while the team brought forward its first pit stop to approximately 50 minutes into the race.

The decision allowed Ferrari to gain strategic positions and remain in contact with the main contenders. Later, Antonio Fuoco and Nicklas Nielsen maintained a consistent pace, managing tires and fuel while the team waited for an opportunity.

That opportunity arrived in the final minutes.

Nielsen was behind the wheel when Toyota suffered its hydraulic failure. Ferrari, which had spent much of the race trying to keep up with the leaders, was suddenly handed the position that mattered most: first place.

The result also shows that in a six-hour race, a team does not necessarily need to lead for most of the event to win. It needs to be in the right position when the opportunity appears.
Toyota was minutes away from victory

Toyota arrived at COTA leading the championship and searching for a victory it had not yet achieved at the circuit. Toyota #7 started only ninth on the grid, but quickly turned that disadvantage into one of the race's major recoveries.

Nyck de Vries was one of the highlights of the race. The Dutchman showed very strong pace and helped the GR010 Hybrid move through the field until reaching the lead.

During the final phase, Toyota appeared to have found the ideal combination of pace, strategy and track position. The problem came with approximately 11 minutes remaining.

A hydraulic pressure failure caused the loss of power steering and prematurely ended the #7's race. At that moment, Toyota had an advantage of approximately six seconds over Ferrari.

In a six-hour race, the difference between victory and retirement was decided in a matter of minutes.
Reliability becomes the protagonist again

The COTA result perfectly summarizes the essence of endurance racing. Toyota had pace, track position, an advantage and a strategy that was working. But it could not reach the checkered flag.

That is exactly why the WEC cannot be analyzed only through pure speed. A victory depends on the combination of pace, strategy, fuel consumption, tire management, pit stops, reliability and driver performance.

Ferrari was not necessarily the fastest team during every phase of the race. But it was the team that completed the six hours at the front.

In endurance racing, that is what determines the winner.
Cadillac takes advantage of the opportunity and finishes second

The Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA #38, driven by Earl Bamber, Sébastien Bourdais and Jack Aitken, finished second. The result was important for Cadillac, which was involved in the battle for the lead at different stages of the race.

Bamber took the lead after a slow stop put Ferrari #51 out of the top position. However, the Cadillac began running older Michelin tires and came under increasing pressure from competitors with fresher rubber.

Even so, the #38 remained competitive until the finish. With Toyota's retirement, Cadillac inherited a position and finished only 4.471 seconds behind Ferrari.
Alpine completes the podium

The Alpine Endurance Team #35, driven by António Félix da Costa, Charles Milesi and Ferdinand Habsburg, completed the podium. The team's performance was consistent from the beginning of the weekend.

The #35 showed speed in practice and qualifying and remained among the leading cars throughout the race. Félix da Costa played an important role in the battle for the lead during the middle phase, while Milesi and Habsburg kept the car in a competitive position.

Third place confirms Alpine's progress against the leading manufacturers. The margin to victory was also small: the #35 finished only 6.116 seconds behind Ferrari.

That means the top three were separated by less than seven seconds after six hours of racing.
Aston Martin confirms Valkyrie's progress

Aston Martin was one of the strongest teams of the weekend, particularly in terms of pure speed. The #007 Valkyrie, driven by Harry Tincknell, Tom Gamble and Ross Gunn, finished fourth.

The result, however, does not completely represent the potential shown by the team. Tincknell led Free Practice 3 with 1:52.174, while Aston Martin also showed strong performance in the second practice session.

The Valkyrie already demonstrates enough speed to compete close to the leaders. The next step for Aston Martin is to turn that performance into consistent results and, above all, victories.
Ferrari showed speed from qualifying

Ferrari also arrived at COTA showing strength over a single lap. The Ferrari #51, driven by Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Antonio Giovinazzi, took pole position with a time of 1:52.445.

The result had a curious detail: Jack Aitken, in Cadillac #38, recorded exactly the same time. Because Giovinazzi set the mark first, Ferrari took pole.

In Hyperpole, however, Ferrari #50 took the spotlight. Nicklas Nielsen put the #50 in first place with a 1:52.020.

Therefore, the victory cannot be explained only by Toyota's failure. Ferrari demonstrated enough speed to compete at the front throughout the weekend.

What was missing was turning that performance into a result. At COTA, it finally happened.
Ferrari #51 experiences the other side of endurance racing

While #50 celebrated victory, Ferrari #51 had a much more difficult race. The car started from pole and had the conditions to fight for the win.

However, a slow pit stop during the fourth hour caused the #51 to lose positions and fall toward the lower parts of the Top 10.

The episode is a classic example of the extremely small margins that exist in the WEC. The car had speed. The strategy was competitive.

But a few seconds lost in the pits were enough to turn a possible fight for victory into a recovery race.
Tires and strategy played a fundamental role

COTA's conditions also placed tire management at the center of the race. The high Texas temperatures increased the importance of controlling Michelin degradation, especially during longer stints.

Cadillac #38 was one of the clearest examples. The car managed to lead while using older tires and had to defend its position against competitors running fresher rubber.

This changed the performance balance throughout each stint. The circuit features 5.513 km and 20 corners, as well as long straights, heavy braking zones and elevation changes.

The challenge for the teams was finding a setup capable of preserving the tires without sacrificing speed. In addition, sporadic rain added another variable to the strategy.
COTA demands a balance between speed and efficiency

The Circuit of The Americas has very particular characteristics. It measures 5.513 km, with 20 corners — 11 left-handers and nine right-handers — as well as long straights, heavy braking points and significant elevation changes.

This layout requires the Hypercars to be efficient both in top speed and through medium- and high-speed corners. The weekend showed different strengths among the manufacturers.

Aston Martin stood out in qualifying. Ferrari executed an efficient strategy. Toyota found excellent race pace. Cadillac remained competitive for most of the race.

And Alpine confirmed that it is getting increasingly close to the leading group.
Neutralizations changed the race scenario

The race was also marked by different periods of neutralization. There were two Safety Car interventions and three Full Course Yellow periods.

In endurance racing, this type of neutralization can completely change a race. A team that lost time before a Safety Car can recover much of the deficit when the field is grouped together.

Likewise, a car that has just made a pit stop can lose part of its strategic advantage. It was another element that kept the battle open throughout the six hours.
LMGT3: Aston Martin takes victory

While Ferrari won in Hypercar, Aston Martin had its biggest moment in LMGT3. The Heart of Racing #27, with Ian James, Zacharie Robichon and Mattia Drudi, took victory in the class.

The result ended a two-year winless period for the team and represented its second victory at COTA in the last three editions of the race.

Aston Martin had already shown strength in qualifying. The two cars from the manufacturer occupied the front row of LMGT3, with Eduardo Barrichello putting the #23 on pole, only 0.124 seconds ahead of #27.

It was also Aston Martin's third consecutive pole in LMGT3 Hyperpole.
Eduardo Barrichello shines again

For Brazilian motorsport, Eduardo Barrichello was once again one of the major highlights. The Brazilian took LMGT3 pole with Aston Martin #23 and reached his third pole in four WEC Hyperpole appearances.

The result reinforces the speed Barrichello has been showing throughout the championship. The Brazilian has demonstrated an ability to extract the maximum from the Aston Martin in qualifying, especially in an extremely competitive class.

This time, however, victory went to the sister car.
Aston Martin #23 finishes third

The Aston Martin #23, driven by Gray Newell, Eduardo Barrichello and Jonny Adam, finished third in LMGT3. Once again, the race showed that pole position does not guarantee a six-hour result.

The #23 started at the front but lost ground during the race. The #27, on the other hand, delivered a more consistent execution and took advantage of the opportunities that emerged throughout the event.

The result secured a 1-3 for Heart of Racing, in one of the team's strongest WEC performances.
Porsche takes second place

Between the two Aston Martins finished the Manthey DK Engineering Porsche 911 GT3 R #91, driven by James Cottingham, Ayhancan Güven and Timur Boguslavskiy.

The Porsche remained competitive for much of the race and finished only a few seconds behind the winner. The result reinforces the balance of LMGT3, a category where small differences in pace, penalties and decisions in the pits can completely change the final order.
Ford starts strongly but loses ground

The Proton Competition Ford Mustang GT3s also started the race in promising fashion. Both cars reached the leading positions during the early stages.

However, problems began to compromise the strategy. The Ford #77, driven by Eric Powell, Ben Tuck and Sebastian Priaulx, received a drive-through for an infraction related to the Full Course Yellow.

Later, the #88 had to make a stop after contact with Corvette #34. Once again, COTA showed that pace is not enough.

In a six-hour race, execution has to match speed.
The impact on the championship

The COTA result could be even more important when looking at the championship. Before the round, Toyota led the manufacturers' championship with 132 points, only five ahead of BMW. Ferrari was third with 88.

After the race, Toyota remains in the lead with 140 points. BMW has 131, while Ferrari moved up to 114 points.

The battle has therefore gained a new dimension. Toyota and BMW remain at the center of the title fight, but Ferrari has officially returned to the battle.

The gap between Toyota and Ferrari fell to only 26 points, with three rounds still remaining.
Drivers' championship also remains tight

Among the drivers, the situation is also extremely close. René Rast and Robin Frijns, from BMW #20, have 75 points, while Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Nyck de Vries, from Toyota #7, also reached 75.

The points distribution among the crews keeps the battle open and makes every result even more important in the final rounds.

The Ferrari #51 drivers have 58 points, while the winning #50 crew reached 54 points. After COTA, Fuoco, Molina and Nielsen once again appear as contenders who cannot be ignored.
Toyota leaves COTA with an important lesson

Perhaps the biggest irony of the race is precisely Toyota's performance. The team managed to do what appeared to be the most difficult task: turn a ninth-place starting position into the race lead.

Nyck de Vries delivered a standout performance. The strategy worked. The pace was there. The #7 had approximately a six-second advantage over Ferrari.

Only 11 minutes remained. And yet Toyota did not win. This does not diminish the team's performance. On the contrary, it shows that the GR010 Hybrid has enough pace to fight for victories.

But it also reinforces one of the WEC's main characteristics: reliability can decide an entire championship.
Ferrari finally responds

For Ferrari, the victory carries even greater significance. The team arrived in Texas as the reigning world champion, but had still not won in 2026.

After an opening stretch of the season without the expected result, COTA represented an important opportunity to respond to its rivals. And Ferrari took it.

The #50 won precisely in a race where Toyota appeared to have absolute control of the situation. There is another significant statistic: Ferrari achieved a sequence of improving results at COTA, with third place in 2024, second in 2025 and victory in 2026.

The progress at the circuit is clear.
Conclusion: a race decided in the final minutes

The Lone Star Le Mans was one of the races that best represented the spirit of the WEC. COTA had strategy, different tire choices, neutralizations, overtakes, mechanical problems, recoveries and changes in the lead.

But above all, it had one essential characteristic of endurance racing: nothing is decided until the checkered flag.

Toyota appeared to have victory in its hands. The #7 led by approximately six seconds. Around 11 minutes remained. Then came the hydraulic failure.

Ferrari #50 inherited the lead and Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen crossed the finish line to claim Ferrari's first victory of the 2026 season.

Cadillac #38 finished second, while Alpine #35 completed the podium. In LMGT3, Heart of Racing #27 Aston Martin won, while Eduardo Barrichello's #23 finished third.

In the championship, Toyota remains in the lead with 140 points, but BMW is only nine points behind with 131. Ferrari reached 114 and reduced its deficit to the leader to 26 points.

With Fuji, Barcelona and Monza still ahead, the battle is completely open.

COTA left a clear message: Ferrari finally found its first victory of the year, Toyota demonstrated that it has the pace to dominate a race, BMW remains alive in the battle and three manufacturers reach the final rounds with real chances of fighting for the title.

In the WEC, six hours can be decided in a few minutes. In Austin, only a few were needed to transform an almost certain Toyota victory into Ferrari's first win of 2026.
