Max Garcia aproveita a oportunidade
A vitória estava garantida.
Tymek Kucharczyk perde terreno
INDY NXT at Milwaukee: Max Garcia Claims First Win as Championship Battle Heads to Laguna Seca
The INDY NXT by Firestone round at the Milwaukee Mile delivered exactly what could be expected from one of the final races of the season: speed, overtaking, position changes and, above all, major consequences for the championship battle.
In a 90-lap race marked by a record number of overtakes, 17-year-old Max Garcia claimed his first INDY NXT victory after starting ninth. The Abel Motorsports driver took advantage of Josh Pierson's retirement, after the Andretti Global driver had dominated the race until an accident, and then held off his rivals in the closing laps.
More important than Garcia's victory, however, was the impact the race had on the championship.
Enzo Fittipaldi, Nikita Johnson and Tymek Kucharczyk arrived in Milwaukee separated by just 18 points. After 90 laps, the championship battle remains wide open and will be decided during the season finale at Laguna Seca.
Milwaukee: a different kind of oval
The Milwaukee Mile is 1.015 miles long and features only nine degrees of banking in the corners. Although it is an oval, the circuit requires a very particular approach from the drivers.
The relatively low banking makes car setup especially important and allows drivers to use different racing lines throughout the race. Enzo Fittipaldi highlighted this characteristic during the test held at Milwaukee in June, explaining that the track allows drivers to extract a significant amount of performance through driving technique because of how different it is from the other ovals on the calendar.
That characteristic was evident throughout the race.
The event produced 208 on-track passes, setting a new record for an INDY NXT race at Milwaukee. That statistic shows that the race was not simply determined by qualifying performance.
Drivers who were able to find different lines and maintain speed in traffic had the opportunity to move through the field.
Josh Pierson turns pole position into dominance — until the crash
Josh Pierson began the weekend with an important achievement.
The Andretti Global driver secured his first INDY NXT pole position, while also setting a new two-lap average speed record at Milwaukee with 153.434 mph.
It was Pierson's first pole in his 52nd INDY NXT start.
And he immediately confirmed his pace in the race.
Pierson took control from the start and led the opening 53 laps.
The driver built a lead of more than two seconds over his closest competitors and appeared to be on course for his first INDY NXT victory.
But Milwaukee once again demonstrated how quickly an oval race can change.
On Lap 54, Pierson lost control of his car in Turn 2, spun and hit the tire barrier.
The race that appeared to be completely under his control was suddenly over.
It was one of the most important moments of the event.
Max Garcia takes advantage of the opportunity
Pierson's retirement opened the door for Max Garcia.
The Abel Motorsports driver had started ninth but gradually worked his way forward.
Garcia passed Jack Beeton for second place on Lap 35 and began putting pressure on Pierson for the lead.
When the race leader crashed, Garcia inherited first place.
From that point forward, the challenge was no longer about gaining positions. It was about defending the lead.
And that was far from easy.
The race featured four restarts during the final 37 laps.
Each caution period brought Garcia's rivals back within striking distance, eliminating much of the advantage he had built.
Even so, the young driver responded.
On Lap 83, Jack Beeton attempted to move underneath Garcia in Turn 1 but could not complete the pass.
On the final restart on Lap 86, Garcia produced an excellent launch and created enough of a gap to control the closing laps.
The victory was his.
First victory and a major milestone for Garcia
The Milwaukee win was Max Garcia's first victory in INDY NXT.
The result was also an important moment for Abel Motorsports, which found a major breakthrough during a difficult season.
Garcia had shown speed throughout the weekend, but he needed to turn that potential into a result.
The victory came in a race that required him to demonstrate two essential qualities for a developing driver:
adaptability and composure.
He did not start as the favorite.
He did not start from the front row.
He did not lead most of the race.
But he remained competitive, found opportunities in traffic and, when the opportunity appeared, was in exactly the right position to take advantage of it.
After that, he had to defend the lead through a series of restarts.
It was a victory built in several different stages.
JM Correa claims the best result of his career
Another major highlight was JM Correa.
The Cusick Morgan Motorsports driver finished second, securing the best result of his INDY NXT career.
Correa also benefited from Pierson's retirement, but he still had to execute his own race to capitalize on the opportunity.
During the closing stages, he was involved in an intense battle with Jack Beeton for second place.
On the final restart, the two drivers went side-by-side, but Correa came out ahead and secured second.
The result represents an important step forward for the driver and demonstrates how Milwaukee can create opportunities for competitors still looking for their breakthrough at the front of the field.
Jack Beeton completes the podium
Jack Beeton finished third.
The HMD Motorsports driver was one of the protagonists during the second half of the race and came close to challenging Garcia directly for the victory.
His attempt on Lap 83, however, was not enough.
Beeton then had to defend his position against Correa during the final restart and ultimately settled for third.
Although he did not win, the podium once again highlights the strong form of HMD Motorsports.
The team had already dominated the Mid-Ohio weekend with Enzo Fittipaldi, who won both races, started both from pole and led every lap.
In Milwaukee, HMD once again placed one of its cars on the podium.
The championship: Fittipaldi leads, but nothing is decided
The biggest consequence of the Milwaukee race concerns the championship.
Enzo Fittipaldi arrived at Milwaukee leading the standings by just one point over Nikita Johnson and 18 points over his teammate Tymek Kucharczyk.
It was one of the closest championship battles in recent INDY NXT history.
Fittipaldi finished seventh.
Johnson finished sixth.
Kucharczyk finished only 12th.
As a result, Fittipaldi remains in the championship lead, but the gap between the three contenders is far too small to provide any sense of security.
The season will now be decided at Laguna Seca.
Nikita Johnson: consistency could be decisive
Nikita Johnson may have left Milwaukee with one of the most valuable results from a championship perspective.
The Cape Motorsports driver finished sixth and, more importantly, maintained his remarkable consistency.
Before the race, Johnson was the only driver among the three title contenders to have finished every race of the season inside the top 10.
That kind of consistency could prove decisive in such a close championship.
Johnson has also demonstrated strong oval form throughout the season.
He finished seventh at World Wide Technology Raceway and second at Nashville, making him the only one of the three championship contenders with two top-10 finishes on the previous ovals.
Milwaukee once again confirmed his ability to score points even when he is not directly fighting for victory.
Fittipaldi faces a more difficult weekend
Enzo Fittipaldi's seventh-place finish was not necessarily a bad result, but it was below the level he had demonstrated during much of the season.
Fittipaldi arrived in Milwaukee after an impressive Mid-Ohio weekend, where he won both races, started both from pole, led every lap and recorded the fastest lap in both events.
He had also been the fastest driver during the Milwaukee test in June.
For that reason, seventh place can be viewed as a partially missed opportunity.
At the same time, there is a positive side.
Fittipaldi did not necessarily need to win.
In a championship decided by small margins, seventh place still means scoring points and leaving Milwaukee with the championship lead intact.
Now the battle moves to a very different environment.
Tymek Kucharczyk loses ground
Of the three championship contenders, Tymek Kucharczyk had the most difficult result.
The HMD Motorsports driver finished 12th and lost an important opportunity to close the gap to his two main rivals.
Even so, his championship hopes are far from over.
Kucharczyk has one of the strongest records of the three contenders on permanent road courses.
Before Milwaukee, he had an average finishing position of 3.77 on permanent road courses, the best of the three main title contenders.
That factor could become decisive.
Laguna Seca completely changes the equation
The most important factor heading into the finale is that Milwaukee was the final oval race of the season.
The remaining races will take place at Laguna Seca, including a doubleheader on September 5 and 6.
That completely changes the analysis.
Oval results do not necessarily reflect what we will see at the end of the championship.
Fittipaldi has demonstrated strong form on permanent road courses throughout the season.
Kucharczyk has also posted an excellent average on this type of circuit.
Johnson, meanwhile, arrives with the advantage of consistency.
That means the championship will not simply be decided by who is fastest.
It will be decided by whoever can combine speed, consistency and risk management across the final three races of the season.
Alessandro de Tullio remains a driver to watch
Even though he is no longer in championship contention, Alessandro de Tullio deserves attention.
The AJ Foyt Racing driver has one of the most impressive qualifying statistics of the season.
Before Milwaukee, De Tullio had secured eight poles in 14 races, just one short of Pato O'Ward's record of nine poles set in 2018.
His main challenge throughout the season has been turning that qualifying speed into victories.
He managed to do exactly that in Portland, where he claimed his second win of the season.
With the final races taking place at Laguna Seca, De Tullio will have further opportunities to convert his qualifying pace into strong race results.
What did Milwaukee teach us about INDY NXT?
The race once again demonstrated why a race is never decided before the checkered flag.
Josh Pierson had the fastest car.
He started from pole.
He led 53 laps.
At one point, he had more than a two-second advantage.
And he ultimately failed to finish the race.
Max Garcia, on the other hand, started ninth and finished first.
That is one of the defining characteristics of INDY NXT.
The series is not simply a technical stepping stone toward IndyCar.
It is also an environment where young drivers learn how to manage unpredictable race situations.
Garcia demonstrated that perfectly.
A decisive race for the championship
Milwaukee also played its part in creating an exciting championship finale.
Enzo Fittipaldi remains in the lead.
Nikita Johnson remains close behind.
Tymek Kucharczyk has lost ground but is still in contention.
The difference now is that there is very little room for recovery through a single race.
There will be three races at Laguna Seca.
And every one of them will carry enormous weight.
INDY NXT arrives at its final weekend with one of the closest championship battles of the 2026 season.
Conclusion
The Milwaukee round ended with a surprise winner and plenty of tension in the championship battle.
Max Garcia claimed his first INDY NXT victory after a mature performance, taking advantage of Josh Pierson's retirement and holding off his rivals during the closing laps.
JM Correa secured the best result of his career, while Jack Beeton completed the podium.
But for the championship, the most important result was elsewhere.
Enzo Fittipaldi remains in the lead.
Nikita Johnson is still within striking distance.
Tymek Kucharczyk remains in contention.
And now everything will be decided at Laguna Seca.
Milwaukee showed that speed alone is not enough.
Pierson had pole position and led the race until his crash.
Garcia was in the right place when the opportunity appeared.
The same logic applies to the championship.
The title will not necessarily go to the driver with the fastest car.
It will go to the driver who makes the fewest mistakes during the final three races of the season.
And with three drivers separated by a relatively small margin, INDY NXT heads to Laguna Seca with everything still to play for.
